The new "Starfish" robot from Cornell is no bigger than a Robosapien V2, but like my SAM it knows about itself and without sight capability can modify its walk to compensate for crippling damage.

Also like SAM, it starts not knowing how to do anything, but over time learns its behavior. Read about it at http://news.com.com/Researchers+unveil+a+self-aware+rob...11394_3-6136608.html and view a series of pictures. What do you think about this development?

The final SAM had vision and could see himself. Perhaps with vision this robot could learn to see a new part for the one lost and figure out how to shed the damaged one and install a new one.
